Abortion pill RU 486 are used to provoke a form of early abortion. The abortion pill should not be confused with the so called morning-after pills (Emergency Contraception Pills). Morning-after pills should be taken within 72 hours, preferably even within 24 hours, after unprotected sex to prevent a pregnancy. Abortion pills can be used until the end of the 8th pregnancy week and are only used when a pregnancy has been confirmed.

Abortion pills will cause a so called medical abortion and is an alternative to the traditional surgical abortion method. Two different types of medications are combined during the procedure: mifepristone and misoprostol. Mifepristone and misoprostol are both FDA approved for medical abortions.
