Information on the abortion pill
Abortion pills are used to provoke early abortions. Abortion pills are not the same thing as Emergency Contraception Pills (morning-after pills) and abortion pills can be used several weeks into a pregnancy. Abortion pills are only used once a pregnancy has been confirmed.
There are several different abortion pills available worldwide and it is therefore important to follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer and your doctor. Do not rely on general and unspecified information on the abortion pill, since different abortion pills come with different instructions.
In the United States, the FDA has approved two different abortion pills: Mifepristone and Misoprostol. It is common to use these two pills in combination with each other, since it is more efficient than using only one of them. Mifepristone and Misoprostol were approved by the FDA quite recently, but they have been successfully used in Europe for many years. When used correctly, a combination of Mifepristone and Misoprostol are over 95% effective within 2 weeks.
When you see your doctor to have a medical abortion, you will get two abortion pills. The first one is Mifepristone, which should be taken directly. The second pill is Misoprostol and should be taken after at least 24 hours, and within 72 hours. Mifepristone will block progesterone, a hormone necessary for pregnancies. By blocking progesterone, Mifepristone will cause the uterine lining to shed and turn the cervix soft. Bleeding can occur when this happens, but absence of bleeding is also common. Misoprostol can be taken orally or vaginally. This pill will cause the uterus to contract and the abortion will be completed. Severe cramping, intense bleeding and clotting are common after taking Misoprostol.
