Birth Controll pills and Abortions
Birth control pill and abortion is a controversial subject. If you feel that an abortion or miscarriage takes place as soon as a fertilized egg is rejected by the body, than it is true that some birth control pills can cause abortions during the very first hours of pregnancy when the fertilized egg tries to implant itself in the uterine lining.
There are several types of birth control pills available today. One type of pill combines two hormones, progestogen and estrogen, and is therefore referred to as a combination pill. There also a type of birth control pills that only contains progestogen, and these pills are known as progestogen-only pills or “mini-pills”.
If you use the first type of birth control pill, the combination pill, pregnancy will be prevented in three different ways.
- The pills will stop the development of the egg in the ovary. If no egg develops, no egg can be fertilized.
- The pills will change the mucus in the cervix and make it hard for the sperms to reach an egg. In cases where the combination pills fails to hamper egg development, this will act as extra protection against fertilization.
- The pills will prevent the lining of the uterus to become fully developed. This means that if stage one fails, and an egg is developed and released, and stage two fails during the same cycle, thereby letting sperms reach the egg and fertilize it, than the fertilized egg will be unable to implant itself in the lining of the uterus.
As you can see, it is possible for an egg to become fertilized and then expelled by the body, since the egg cannot implant itself in the lining of the uterus. This is why many people who feel that life begins at fertilization decide not to use birth control pills; they do not want to risk having a fertilized egg expelled from their body.
The second type of pill, the one with progestogen only, have a higher risk for so called “break-through” ovulations. With combination pills, ovulation is rare. With progestogen-only pills, ovulations can occur in up to 50 percent of the cycles. If you want to minimize the risk of having fertilized eggs expelled, combination pills are therefore a better alternative than progestogen- only pills.
It should be noted that the type of abortion that can occur when you use birth control pills (regardless of whether it is combination pills or progestogen-only pills) is very different from the type of abortion that we normally associate with the word abortion. The fertilized egg will be expelled during the normal menstruation, before the woman knows that an egg has been fertilized. The egg is too small to be visible and there is no unusual pain or cramping. |
