How effective is the abortion pill?
The abortion pill is highly affective if you use a combination of mifepristone and misoprostol. Some clinics use only one of these active ingredients, but the most effective alternative is to take one pill containing mifepristone and another pill containing misoprostol. Both mifepristone and misoprostol are approved by the United States FDA, and they have also been used for many years in Europe.
If you use both mifepristone and misoprostol, and use them correctly, they are 95-97% effective within 14 days. This is because mifepristone work in one way and misoprostol in another, to ensure a high efficiency rate. The first pill to take is the one with mifepristone. Mifepristone blocks a hormone called progesterone which is essential for maintaining a pregnancy. As a result of the blocked progesterone, the cervix will turn soft and the uterine lining will start to shed. The second pill, the one containing misoprostol, should be taken 24-72 hours after the first abortion pill. Misoprostol will cause uterine contractions and provoke an abortion. In most cases, the embryo will be expelled within 6-8 hours after taking misoprostol, if you have prepared the body by first taking mifepristone.
Even though these abortion pills are highly affective, you should always get a follow-up exam from a doctor two weeks after taking abortion pills. Only a doctor can determine if a medical abortion has been completed or not.
