Over The Counter Abortion pill
The term abortion pill can be used to describe two very different types of pills.
Over the counter abortion pill: Emergency Contraception
These pills are also known as “morning after pills” or “Plan B”, and you can take them within 120 hours of intercourse to prevent pregnancy. They contain levonorgestrel and their main effect is two prevent an egg from being released altogether. If that fails, the levonorgestrel dose can still be able to delay the release of the egg for a while, which means that when the egg is finally released all the sperms will have died. There is however always a chance that an egg will be released in time to get fertilized, and if this happens, it may not be able to implant itself in the uterine lining because the levonorgestrel makes the uterine lining unreceptive to fertilized eggs. A fertilized egg that cannot receive nourishment from the uterine lining will be expelled from the body during your next menstruation. This is why some people call this type of pill an over the counter abortion pill.
Over the counter abortion pill: True Abortion Pills
The term abortion pill most commonly refers to this type of pills; pills capable of terminating a confirmed pregnancy. This type of abortion pill can be used until the 8th week of pregnancy.
The truth is however that this type of pill cannot, and should not, be bought over the counter even if it can be found for sale on the internet. It is therefore not an over the counter abortion pill. This type of abortion pill should only be used in combination with medical care. You will need a medical exam to determine whether or not you are pregnant and how far you are, and you will also need a follow up exam two weeks after using the pills.
